From the examination which I have made of Beales lights at the Factory of mefs ; Enderly near Greenwich on the 3rd ; Instant - I have no hesitation in saying that the light was whiter than that either of a [...] candle or of an Argand oil lamp in an excellent state of combustion, the flame was what is called a roaring flame but the general light was steady not exhibiting that flickering effect wich such a flame might be supposed to produce, nor was the sound of the flame great.

The quantity of light from one of Beales burners was very large, the burner was designated as a quart light, it gave a light equal to that of 35½ [...] candles of three to the [...] and 14 Inches long. compared with the Argand lamp it gave the light of above 4½ such lamps. I know nothing personally of the economy of the light but should think it great ; the principle is evidently applicable to a very great extent as is well shown by the system of pipes lights and guages at their (the Enderby's) works
